Keith, I saw that the doctor reported that use of vegetable oils is not
appropriate in India due to their value in cooking. But you would think that
a multipurpose seed which did not have to have the meat disposed of after oil
extraction would be more desirable for India as well as elsewhere. If
inedible seeds are the only option they are certainly the right way to go,
but a shame to not have an edible meat also.
We hope to do some work very soon with Salicornia in Sonora to polish the
effluent from a 320 hectare shrimp farm. We want to clean the discharge
water before it goes back into the estuary but being able to do so with an
oil seed would double our value. In this case the stems have uses, the seed
bears oil and the meat is edible if handled properly. Harvesting is a bit of
an issue since they tend to lodge and to shatter but still doable. Of course
we also require salt tolerance in this case.
The shrimp farm has 6 diesel pumps of 275 hp each. Can you imagine what it
would mean to them to avoid the diesel fuel expense?
