CHAIRMEN'S MESSAGE

It is our great pleasure to invite you to participate in the 1st World Conference and Exhibition on Biomass for Energy and Industry. This event will be the first major biomass event of the new millennium.

The Conference will be unique in that it will incorporate the two large worldwide Conferences in the biomass sector - the traditional European Conference on Biomass for Energy and Industry and the Biomass Conference of the Americas. It will be the major biomass event in 2000, promising to break new records in number of attendees and exhibitors.

Sustainability in energy production and energy use, preservation of resources and climate protection are key words when it comes to initiating the transition from the fossil-nuclear to the solar-efficient age. Bioenergy will play a key role in sustainable development worldwide

Today, various forms of biomass energy account for approximately 15% of the world primary energy consumption and could in the future theoretically supply the equivalent to about 3 times the present global energy demand. The use of biomass as an energy source in industrial and developing countries could not be more contrasting. In industrial countries the use of bioenergy in modern applications is increasing while in poorest developing countries, where biomass represents over 90% of the energy, it is used mostly in its traditional and highly inefficient forms.

The expansion of the biomass sector is illustrated by the record number of contributions to this Conference and the many inquiries for participation. Parallel oral sessions will be held from Tuesday until Friday in order to give more opportunities both to attendees and to speakers to present different point of views about biomass issues. In addition, a large number of exhibiting companies and institutions will make this the largest ever single gathering in the biomass sector.

The cosmopolitan city of Sevilla, a meeting place for the most diverse cultures from throughout history, boasting an artistic heritage unique in the world, will be felt in the unique atmosphere of the south of Spain.

We look forward to welcoming you to Sevilla.

Spyros Kyritsis, Conference Chairman
Raymond Costello, Conference Co-Chairman
Ed Hogan, Conference Co-Chairman
Enzo Millich, Conference Co-Chairman
Wolfgang Palz, Conference Co-Chairman
