Estimados colegas y amigos:

El Centro de Derecho Ambiental y de los Recursos Naturales (CEDARENA) es una
Asociación apolítica, sin fines de lucro y declarada de utilidad pública, cuya
sede se encuentra en San José, Costa Rica. Está conformada por un grupo de
abogados, estudiantes de Derecho y personas vinculadas por un interés común en
las normas jurídicas relacionadas con el medio ambiente y los recursos
naturales. Fue fundada en 1989, como respuesta a una creciente preocupación por
los problemas ambientales y la necesidad de tomar acciones jurídicas al
respecto. El propósito de CEDARENA es armonizar las relaciones entre los seres
humanos y la naturaleza para mejorar la calidad de vida .

El CEDARENA Land Trust (CLT) ha sido desarrollado por el Centro de Derecho
Ambiental y de los Recursos Naturales (CEDARENA). Promueve la conservación de
la biodiversidad existente en tierras de propiedad privada a través de la
investigación, la educación, y el trabajo con propietarios, gobierno y
organizaciones-no-gubernamentales (ONGs).

La misión del CLT es identificar, diseñar e implementar mecanismos que
contribuyan a la protección de los ecosistemas naturales localizados en tierras
de propiedad privada en América Latina y específicamente protejemos recursos
naturales en Costa Rica. La mayor parte de los esfuerzos que se han realizado
hasta la fecha se han dirigido a la promoción y establecimiento de servidumbres
ecológicas, coordinando con ONGs socias en diversos países del continente
americano.

La Red Costarricense de Reservas Naturales Privadas establecida en 1995, nació
como una iniciativa privada de aglutinar en una sola asociación, sin fines de
lucro, un importante número de reservas naturales privadas, que se habían
venido estableciendo en Costa Rica desde hacía varias décadas, pero sin contar
con una organización que trabajara por un objetivo común de conservar sus
bosques.

La Red cuenta actualmente con reservas naturales privadas afiliadas que en su
conjunto abarcan una superficie de 55.000 hectareas de bosques bajo protección,
de las cuales casi la totalidad posee bosques primarios. Estas reservas se
dedican a varias actividades, incluyendo la protección absoluta, investigación,
ecoturismo, bioprospección y el aprovechamiento sostenible de recursos no
leñosos del bosque. 

CEDARENA Land Trust y la Red Costarricense de Reservas Naturales Privadas,
gracias a la colaboración de otras instituciones y ONGs, organizan el I
Congreso
Internacional sobre Conservación y Reservas Naturales Privadas los días 14,
15 y
16 de junio del 2000. La sede del evento será el Hotel Corobicí en San José,
Costa Rica.  Contaremos con expositores venidos de diversos países del mundo.
Los idiomas oficiales del evento serán el español y el inglés. Se contará con
traducción simultánea durante todo el evento.

Dear friends and colleagues,

The Environmental and Natural Resources Law Center (CEDARENA) is a non-profit,
non-political association located in San Jose, Costa Rica. It is staffed by a
group of attorneys, law students, and others who share a common interest in
legal issues pertaining to the environment and natural resources. It was
founded in 1989, in response to growing concern about environmental problems
and the need for legal action in this regard. The purpose of CEDARENA is to
harmonize the relationships between human beings and nature to improve the
quality of life. 

The CEDARENA Land Trust (CLT) has been developed by the Environmental and
Natural Resources Law Center (CEDARENA). It promotes the conservation of the
existent biodiversity in lands of private property through the investigation,
the education, and work with proprietors, government and
non-governmental-organizations (NGOs).  
  
The mission of the CLT is to identify, to design and to implement mechanisms
that contribute to the protection of the natural ecosystems located in lands of
private property in Latin America and specifically to protect natural resources
in Costa Rica. Most of the efforts that  have been carried out so far have gone
to the promotion and establishment of conservation easements, coordinating with
partner NGOs in different countries of the American continent.  
  
The Costa Rican Network of Private Natural Reserves founded in 1995, was born
like a private initiative agglutinating in a single non-profit association, an
important number of private natural reserves that have been created in Costa
Rica for several decades, but without having an organization that worked for
the common purpose of conserving their forests.  
  
The Network has affiliated private natural reserves that cover an area of
55.000 hectares of protected forests, most of these are primary forests. These
reserves are devoted to different activities, including preservation,
investigation, ecoturism, bioprospection and the sustainable use of non-timber
resources of the forest.   
  
CEDARENA Land Trust and the Costa Rican Network of Private Natural Reserves,
thanks to the collaboration of other institutions and ONGs, will be hosting the
I International Congress on Conservation and Private Natural Reserves on June
14, 15 and 16, 2000. The headquarters of the event will be the Hotel Corobicí
in San José, Costa Rica.  Conferencists from different countries of the world
will attend. The official languages of the event will be Spanish and English.
There will be simultaneous translation throughout the whole event.
