Una invencion de autralia para mejor uso de la biomasa para energia
termica, con muy bajas emisiones, y que puede quemar biomasa humeda con
bajo poder calorico.

" AN Australian developed heater which burns moist, low-grade fuels without
generating dangerous, emissions could supply cheap and readily available
energy for developing countries facing chronic shortages, says its local
builder Frank Scott.

The biomass heater, which resembles a square pot belly stove, was first
developed in the 1960s by Father Dominic Cremasco at the Catholic Divine Word
Mission in Albury, NSW.

Father Cremasco devised a three stage combustion method in which he could
incinerate wet chicken manure fast enough to generate high combustion
temperatures to produce space heating and hot water.

Mr Scott became aware of the heater when Father Cremasco built a prototype
unit at Mr Scott's neighbour's house in Glen Forrest.

The ability of the. biomass heater to burn low-grade fuels is based on how
it utilises heat from the hot off-gas stream to dry the wet fuel and
preheat the
combustion air.

Primary combustion occurred within the portion of fuel resting on the grate
and was supported by combustion air supplied through holes in the wall at the
bottom of the reservoir.

The burning waste disintegrated and fell through a grate into a secondary
combustion chamber as char.

The combustion of this char, combined with volatile gases from the waste
feed, produced a very hot and efficient reaction.

The ash collected at the bottom of the secondary combustion chamber could
be removed through a door at the front of the heater.

The unit pictured was designed solely for generating hot air, the flow of
heated air was controlled by a valve in the heater's air supply line.

"In conventional heaters you light your fire, the flames rise and escape
through a flue," Mr Scott said. "What we have done is inverted the fire so
that
instead of the flames rising, they bum down and escape through a flue
located on the bottom."

Mr Scott had hoped the heater could eventually be built in big enough
numbers to benefit countries short of expensive, high-grade fuels."
