RE: Biogas from landfil sites.

I have clients that are looking at a LFG project in South America. The flow
rate is 15,200 cfm with 30% methane. Two approaches are being examined. One
is generating electricity to sell into the grid. The second is processing
the gas to produce LNG. Purchased power is available at 2.5 cents/Kwh (not
sure exactly what they mean by purchased power as residential and
commercial rates before taxes vary from 4.9-6.9 c/Kwh). There is a market
for high quality carbon dioxide.

Any input on the feasibility/breakeven of the choices? Other alternatives?

James, Hi-

Your request is a bit vague, so it is hard to reply with specific web
sites.
Biogas from landfill sites is often called landfill gas (LFG). Since LFG
contains roughly 50% methane and 50% carbon dioxide (as well as small
amounts of other gases) and has an energy content of about 500 Btu/SCF, it
has been used primarily (only?) as a fuel. Fuel uses include electrical
and
thermal energy production (both on and off the landfill site), cleaned to
"pipeline quality" gas and compressed for distribution through natural gas
pipelines, and as a motor fuel (again similar to natural gas). I'd start
with the Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP), which was established by
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to encourage sound energy uses of
LFG. The LMOP URL is: http://www.epa.gov/lmop/

Good luck
