Re: DIG-L: Plants fueled by sludge
To answer Arthur's original question (ignoring the "in the USA"), there is
one rotating retort gasification system in the UK that generates a fuel gas
from sewage sludge, after the sludge has been anaerobically processed and
dewatered. The system is built by Waste Gas Technologies <www.wgtuk.com>.
The gas is being flared, at present, but could be used in a gas engine to
generate electricity, along with the biogas that comes from the anaerobic
digesters. The main aim is to reduce the bulk of the processed sludge,
although the residue seems to contain a reasonable amount of metal oxides,
so tends to be fairly reactive. It will need further treatment before it
can be safely disposed of.
I do not know if simialr systems are being used in USA, but there seems to
be a growing interest in rotating retort gasification to deal with a
variety of waste materials, including vehicle tyres.
