Re: DIG-L: straw in digestion

See the results of batch tests on the AD-NETTsite  http://www.ad-nett.org/assets/images/nordberg.PDF

"AD-NETT is a network of professionals working in anaerobic digestion of agro-industrial wastes in Europe and Canada. Its prime motive is to enable exchange of information and experience and to disseminate this information to relevant organisations, such as potential users and developers."

Zhang at UC Davis has been developing a digestor for racetrack straw that is about 80% straw and 20% manure. http://danr.ucop.edu/calag/01SO/speclrpt2.html

Manurenet is another source http://res2.agr.ca/initiatives/manurenet/en/man_digesters.html

PAMI in Canada has been promoting the use of straw as cover for manure storage http://www.pami.ca/PDFs/Pami730.pdf

Several years ago work at Oregon state University suggested that straw additions to pig manure increased gas production. Andy Hashimoto, now Dean of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Humad Resources at the Univeristy of Hawaii at Manoa may remmeber that work but I don't know of current research on the topic. http://www2.ctahr.hawaii.edu/ctahr2001/Profiles/DeanHashimoto.html

Kind regards,

Tom Miles

Subject: DIG-L: straw in digestion

Has there been any work recently on the use of straw in Anaerobic digestion.

In pig excreta digestion, does the feedstock entering, say a CSTR digester, have to be in a slurry form? Can manure be used with straw (obviously as long as it is pumpable). If straw can be used,, does it need to be diluted with dirty water, yard run-off etc?
