RE: DIG-L: UASB

Jose,

Having killed UASB's previously, I find the best way is to set the conditions within the reactor to optimum and then introduce new seed sludge. Literature sources suggest 12-15kg Volatile Suspended Solids (VSS) per m3 of reactor, but I have started plants up with less as this is starting from scratch. There may be some viable sludge left within your plant to allow a reduction in seed sludge. Sludge should be sourced from plants on a similar feed stock - if you are in Europe I could possibly suggest some plants.

The start up procedure should be gradual increasing COD load ensuring 80% COD reduction and total volatile fatty acid conc of <250 mg/l.

Hope this helps and good luck as I know what you are going through!

Subject: DIG-L: UASB

Hello everybody,

For about a month I has been trying to recover our UASB reactor from an
acidification episode, with no success. I tried with clean water, sodium
bicarbonate and small loads of wastewater, but its performance hasn't
improve at all. The wastewater before the reactor is absolutely normal,
with no significative changes on its composition. Anybody can tell me if
this behaviour may be caused by an excess of sludge? if so, which is the
recommended quantity of sludge in a UASB reactor?

Thank you very much and Greetings from Colombia,
