G'day,

If you do not aerate the heap the digestion will be anaerobic and will
(if the right bacteria happen to be present) produce methane, so you not
only have a greenhouse gas but an explosion hazard as well!

I think AD is exothermic, it is just that we put so much water in the
system that you do not notice it (I am an agricultural engineeer by
training, so do not quote me on this point).
