10/29/97 - Ford Wants U.S. to Buy, Not Just Legislate, AFVs

Washington, D.C. - The chairman of Ford Motor Co.
is calling for the federal
government to do its part in reducing gases linked
to global warming by purchasing
more alternative-fueled vehicles (AFVs) for its
own fleets, reports the Detroit News.
The federal government "must do more than preach
or regulate," said Ford Chairman
Alex Trotman this week in a speech on global
warming. "Government is the biggest
user of energy in the United States. So it should
lead by example, including helping to
build a market for alternative-fuel vehicles by
making these vehicles of choice for the
U.S. government fleet." The lobbying organization
for the Big Three automakers, the
                         American Automobile Manufacturers Association,
says the federal government has
about 464,000 total vehicles. Federal fleets are
already required under the Energy
Policy Act of 1992 to make AFVs 33 percent of
their 1997 purchases.
