A friend had a mid-80s VW Rabbit diesel that (he claimed) averaged 48 mpg.
I average 49+ mpg on gasoline in my Honda Civic VX (mostly expressway
across town at 60-70 mph, a little city driving).
There's no reason that LFVs shouldn't exceed 45 mpg routinely; however, at
present fuel economy isn't very interesting to potential purchasers.
Just wait for the next fuel crunch. Then watch the price go up on that 66
mpg Toyota hybrid!
