We must plug in
SOME of the points presented in Eric Peters' commentary on electric
vehicles ("The price of plugging in," Opinion, Nov. 21) are correct.
Yes, these initial offerings are expensive and many people feel the
shorter ranges are not acceptable. However, taking this tack with the
burgeoning electric vehicle industry is irresponsible. It only panders
to our mass addiction to convenience.
We all want to think we are not paying a premium for our
environment-exhausting economics, but our wiser selves know that
government actions to promote clean driving are a must. We also allow
ourselves to believe that we always need instant distance even though
only 10 percent of us drive more than 25 miles per day. And who can
deny that it is these short jaunts that have a high pollution-per-trip
rating?
There are higher price and lower convenience factors to face for
cleaner living. We can pay for these higher quality investments today,
or let our children choke through the even more costly consequences
tomorrow. I hope more journalists will mention these more sobering
facts about the true price of not plugging in.
