I don't have any statistics at hand, but I do recall a brochure from
the Canadian Lung Association that indicated that the number of
instances of childhood asthma is increasing over the past 3 decades.
Our local hospital has recently purchased more oxygen rigs
specifically to handle childhood asthma attacks that were severe
enough to have parents bring their children to the ER for assistance.
I believe the CARB Web page has some statistics on the health effects
of air pollution, and there are European cities that now ban
or restrict fossil-fuel vehicles when they are having a "bad air
day".
If you need more info, I will see what I can come up with. It will
be a couple of weeks before I can get to it, as other projects will
be taking up my time starting Friday for a while.
