Not every serial port is an RS-232, but every RS-232 is a serial port <g>.
RS-232 is a definition for a way to send data serially -- that is, the 8
bits that make up a byte are sent one after another, along with one or two
stop bits. This explains why 1200 bps (remember those days?) actually
prints about 120 characters per second on your screen, or on the Decwriter
(!), or whatever.
There are other definitions (including proprietary ones), but RS-232 has
been the most common for 20-25 years.
