This might be difficult. The transmission is held in by the engine. If you
have a way to hold the transmission in place then it should be no problem.
You could pull the driveshafts, but then you risk the possibility of the
hubs removing themselves from the wheel bearings. Short of making a custom
retainer for the hubs, I would try to get a couple of trashed outer CV
joints from a VW repair shop. You could then put them in the hubs instead
of the driveshaft assemblies. The outer CV joint includes the axle for the
hub, therefore installing it (without the driveshaft) should hold it all
together for you.
