Gasoline has been below a buck a gallon in my part of the country for
several weeks now. At one point, a filling station near my home had both
regular and midgrade posted at 89.9 cents a gallon. A week later the
priced hopped up to about 1.08 a gallon; days later, they are back down
to 99.9 cents.
Supply and demand, gang. In 1971 gas was as low as 25 cents a gallon.
In '73 the "shortage" rumblings were pushing it to 38 cents. Wasn't long
before it broke a buck and stayed there. At that point, GM, Ford and
Chrysler were staring at lots full of big cars they couldn't sell, and
Toyota couldn't make Corollas fast enough.
Next time the Mideast cartel re-unites and decides their product is worth
more, you can bet the increase will be significant. And once again the
big three will be staring at lots full of big SUVs and pickups they can't
sell, and Toyota won't be able to make Priuses and E-Coms fast enough.
