golf cart parts?

hello all,

 before i even go to the golf cart dealer, where i am told i can get a
motor and controller for $600-$1000. what are the pros and cons of this
technology?
 i am planning to make a light, scratch built single seat EV.
you can reply to me directly and feel free to go into excessive detail or
to the list if you feel like it.
