Re: SYNTHETIC LUBES

I've been a fan of synthetic oils for many years. I've never had a
problem with using them. Recently I've made acquaintance with a guy who races
an X1/9, he'd become fed up with rebuilding engines for his Clan Crusader
(fiberglass monococque kitcar). Peter had a pile of around 20 cranks still
hanging around to prove his problem. Peter and I were arguing the merits of
synthetic oils, he stated that he'd tried Mobil 1 in the Hillman Imp engines in
the Clan, but that it appeared that the seals were incompatible and a
previously oiltight engine became a mobile track lubricator.
If you attempt to use synthetic oils in older vehicles (over about 20
years) you MAY have to replace all oilseals.
