The aircraft alternator I have is 3-phase, 15kw continuous duty, 120/208v
(120v from any phase wire to neutral, 208v from phase wire to phase wire). It
delivers 400 Hz at 4000 rpm, so it is a 12-pole machine.

"Alternator" is another name for a wound-rotor synchronous motor. These
aircraft alternators can be run as synchronous motors. But they have the same
drawbacks as aircraft generators; they are optimized for weight, not efficiency.
Also, they have the characteristics of a shunt motor, not a series motor. Very
high starting current, and low starting torque.
