Rich,

You need the 2x4 this time. I think you're talking out of your A___. You
don't need 2-5HP. How many A/C systems have you put in EVs? I've done 4.
What do you always say about talking from experience? 1.5HP is plenty to
run the AC AND power steering. 1HP is enough for A/C alone. You are right
about two things:
1) Belt down the compressor speed. (Small pulley on aux motor)
2) Use the pack voltage
and
3) Use a motor rated HIGHER than your system like the 180V motor we have.
Otherwise on start-up you get a huge surge and lots of sparks. Snubber
helps also.
4) Keep everything else stock. Use the stock compressor clutch to cycle
the compressor on and off.

I have an Atlanta Scientific 100V PM 1 HP fan cooled motor that came out of
an AC system if anyone wants it. Voltage is lower than desireable, but it
works.
