AC to DC drive

Okay, now that the server is back up, let me try yet again. Third
time's a charm, right?

Subject: AC to DC drive

Well, I've had my eyes on purchasing an S-10 EV which operated at one
time under a high-voltage AC drive system (U.S. Electricar
conversion). At the moment it sits unused due to problems with its AC
system. I will likely get a great deal on the truck itself, especially
if I were to remove the AC components and leave them behind.
In doing so, what would be the...

1) "best"
2) most efficient
3) cleanest/easiest

ways of going DC? I am thinking that with the one-speed that is in
there at the moment, and the fact that the truck is set up for an
automatic transmission, I would have some serious issues to deal with
in going to a DC motor, which generally requires more than a
one-speed. With an automatic tranny, shifting occurs at the opportune
time for an engine, right? Wouldn't this work against the efficient
shifting of a DC motor? And going to a manual would require extensive
modifications to the vehicle, right? Or is it not that difficult? Is
there a reasonable way to make the change from AC to DC? I have an
excellent opportunity with this vehicle, and would hate to have to
pass it up.

Any insight will be much appreciated. Keep in mind that I'm a rookie
EVer and not exactly an expert mechanically. To be safe, you can speak
to me like I'm a four-year-old. I won't take offense! Thanks.
