Ghia "glider" for sale

I noticed a VW Karmann Ghia for sale in the back of this month's Hot VWs
magazine. It has a blown motor and an auto stick shift. If the car is as
complete as it looks, it is a perfect conversion "glider" for $1795.

Awhile back, I was talking to a fellow on the list about using the auto
stick shift for an EV conversion. He had very sucessfully used one for a
conversion. You chuck the torque converter and use the center from an
ordinary VW clutch disk to build a coupler. (The vacuum-operated clutch has
in input shaft that is just like the standard input shaft of a manual trans
VW.) You tap into the shifter switch (that disengages the vacuum-operated
clutch when you move the shift lever) and though a relay, make it short out
the pot box. Thus, when you shift gears, the clutch disengages and the
controller output goes to zero automatically. Slick and very user-friendly.

The auto stick shift has only three gears. First gear is eliminated,
perfect for a conversion.

With a little effort, the auto stick shift makes an ideal conversion.
What's better is that it on the original ICE car, using the torque
converter, it was a dog. This makes the auto stick cars cost less, even
though they make a much better conversion!
