Third Significant Patent Issued For Manhattan Scientifics Miniature
Fuel Cell
LOS ALAMOS, N.M., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Manhattan Scientifics, Inc.
today said another new patent has been issued to inventor Robert
Hockaday for proprietary micro fuel cell technology owned by the
company's licensor, Energy Related Devices. The latest patent is
titled "Surface Replica Fuel Cell for Micro Fuel Cell Electrical Power
Pack."

Commenting on the patent, Hockaday said, "This further secures our
unique position in this rapidly emerging technology which scales fuel
cells to a size appropriate for portable consumer devices. This
latest patent covers our concept of an integrated power pack device
that we believe will have extensive applications for consumer
electronics and gets us to our ultimate goal in a significantly
shorter period."

The patent is the third one granted in connection with Hockaday's
development of miniature fuel cells. The earlier two patents covered
the basic concept of the miniature fuel cell itself and the concept of
manufacturing the fuel cell like a printed circuit board. Hockaday has
a number of other patents pending.

Marvin Maslow, Chairman and CEO of Manhattan Scientifics, said, "This
patent brings us another step closer to commercialization of the
miniature fuel cell. We are very pleased with the ability of Bob
Hockaday to continue to strengthen our his leadership position in this
exciting new technology."

Hockaday's initial goal is to produce power packs for cellular phones
that will allow phones to remain on standby for up to 40 days compared
to the 24 hours that cellular phones can now remain powered up before
running down. The company is currently investigating strategic
partnerships with several large national and international firms to
advance the technology to commercialization within two years.

Despite the potential to run on renewable energy sources such as
methanol, fuel cell technology so far has not been practical for
consumer electronics because of the size of the devices necessary to
produce small amounts of electrical energy. Now, using the materials
and miniaturization technology that have reduced computers from
refrigerator size machines to the size of a dime, Hockaday has
developed a working micro fuel cell technology capable of powering
small portable devices such as phones or laptop computers. The
critical fuel cell material developed by Hockaday can be printed
inexpensively on roll plastic film, much the same way that printed
circuits are produced. Because the materials used have no negative
impact on the environment, there are no disposal problems, which are a
concern for many municipalities that have enacted bans on battery
disposal.

Manhattan Scientifics, Inc. currently serves as a technology incubator
for two companies, Energy Related Devices, Inc., a licensor of certain
technologies to the company, and Tamarack Storage Devices, Inc., a
subsidiary of Manhattan Scientifics. Both companies possess patented
technologies that provide solutions that will potentially shape the
future for two of the most critical issues in the advancement of
consumer electronics: portable power and data storage.

The foregoing press release contains forward-looking statements,
including statements regarding the company's expectation of its future
business. These forward looking statements are based largely on the
company's expectations and are subject to a number of risks and
uncertainties, certain of which are beyond the company's control.
Actual results could differ materially from these forward looking
statements as a result of a variety of factors including successfully
completing the research and development with respect to the micro fuel
cell, successfully commercializing the micro fuel cell for mass
production, successfully protecting the company's patents, and
effective significant industry competition from various entities whose
research and development, financial, sales and marketing and other
capabilities far exceeds the company's. In light of these risks and
uncertainties there can be no assurances that the forward-looking
statements in this press release will in fact transpire or prove to be
accurate.
