Aircraft Generator Questions

Can you run an aircraft starter/generator in a single gear, like say
third?

It's rated at 36 volts. How high voltage battery pack can be used? 72
volts or less is my understanding, but...?

Background info:
I was showing off my EV at a work picnic the other day. One guy was
really interested and plans to convert his old Mazda pickup once its ICE
dies (another year or two). He would like to leave out the clutch, which
he could do regardless, but would rather leave it in if he has to shift
gears while moving. I don't know how good the cooling is in a
starter/generator and whether it could handle single gear use.

Since it's a small pickup, it can obviously haul more than 72 volts worth
of batteries (6 volt golf cart batteries of course). Cost is paramount.

Thanks,

Jonathan
