June 19th, Flat-heads and EVs! Yee Haw!
I just got off the phone with Jeff Sipes at Bandimere Speedway in
Morrison, Colorado. He called me to arrange the date for the EV drags this
Spring. The tentitive date is Saturday, June 19th. (They publish the
schedule in 6 weeks. Until it is in print, the date is said to be "tentitive.")
This will be a combined event at the track . There will be Flat-head
In-line Nationals that day as well as an an ET - series competition. The ET
- series is a national NHRA-sanctioned bracket race with bikes, stock,
pro-stock, dragsters, roadsters, etc.
What I'm REALLY excited about is that we are sharing the track with the
Flat-head In-line Nationals. This is a national NHRA-sanctioned event. These
are vintage drag cars running vintage engines. I couldn't think of a better
event for us to share the day with. EV drag racing is in it's infancy and we
will share the spotlight with cars from the era of ICE drag racing infancy.
The new versus the old, but both are drag racing pioneers at the same stage
of development. It's absolutely perfect.
For those that aren't aware, there is no doubt that new records will be
set at this event. The track has an altitude of appoximately 5,280 ft. The
air is 20% thinner. EVs don't need to "breathe" but they have to push air
out of the way as they go down the track. All EVs will get slightly better
times, but fast, full-bodied cars (like the Maniac Mazda) will go
substancially faster because of the 20% reduction in aerodynamic drag. EV
records set at Bandimere will be very tough to break at any other track.
It is also worth noting that this will be the very first NHRA-NEDRA
joint event under the new NHRA EV Class rules. A little bit of history is
being made.
Maybe I'll have my AC drag bike running by then. I'll do my best. I'll
bring the Wabbit for sure. This time I'll try to keep all the tranny parts
inside the case and off the track. ;^)
