There are no serious difficulties in making 300v light bulbs. Anyone in Europe
can tell you that large numbers of 230v lamps are available. Once could also
hook pairs of lamps in series in cases where it doesn't matter if they both go
out together.

More importantly, gas discharge lamps (fluorescent, neon, HID, etc.) are all
more efficient and longer lived, and they all like high voltages. Much of the
cost of the HID headlights is in the need for an inverter to step the 12v up
to a reasonable voltage for these lamps to operate.
