Actually they are all using AC motors. The motor that has DC flowing in its
windings is a rare beast indeed. Brush motors have a mechanical inverter, the
commutator, to generate AC in the armature windings. The name brushless DC is a
poor choice, it is used to indicate that permanent magnets are used. A better
name is AC synchronous. Most US (production) EV's are using induction motors,
which are also described as AC asynchronous.
