Can this be overcome by spreading out the discharge with more NiMH units
in parallel?

Hmm.. But then again, if it's in a garage for the charge, would a heat
sink+peltier cooling do the trick? I take it since the charging is via
electrical outlet that the power source won't be a problem. :)
