FCEV - Industrial Environment (INDV) BALLARD POWER GETS $2.1 MILLION
FUEL CELL ORDER FROM HONDA. 03/01/99 Copyright 1999 Information

Ballard Power Systems, Vancouver, British Columbia, has secured a $2.1
million contract (US$1.4 million) from Honda R&D Co., Ltd., of
Saitama, Japan, a subsidiary of the Honda Motor Company, to supply
Ballard Fuel Cells, related equipment and support services. Honda will
use the Ballard Fuel Cells in their research and development program
for evaluation and development of fuel cell powered electric
vehicles.
"Honda is a leader in the development of environmentally friendly
vehicles and has an aggressive fuel cell vehicle development program,"
said Firoz Rasul, president and CEO of Ballard. "We are pleased to be
supplying additional Ballard Fuel Cells to assist them in the next
stage of their development program."
Ballard Power Systems is the world leader in developing, manufacturing
and marketing zero-emission proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells
for use in transportation, electricity generation and portable
products. Ballard Power Systems' proprietary fuel cell technology is
enabling automobile, electrical equipment and portable power product
manufacturers to develop and sell environmentally clean products. The
fundamental component of these end-user products is the Ballard Fuel
Cell that combines hydrogen (which can be obtained from methanol,
natural gas or petroleum) and oxygen (from air) without combustion to
generate electricity. Ballard is partnering with strong, world-leading
companies including DaimlerChrysler, Ford, GPU International, ALSTOM
and EBARA to commercialize the Ballard Fuel Cell. Additional
customers using the Ballard Fuel Cell include General Motors, Nissan,
Volkswagen, Volvo, Matsushita Electric Works, and Cinergy. For more
information, call 604/412-3195.

FCEV - Chicago Tribune (TRIB) TRANSPORTATION FUEL CELLS POWER IDEAS,
TOO From Tribune News Services. 02/28/99 (Copyright 1999 by the
Chicago Tribune)
On-board coffeemakers, 110/220- volt plug-ins for power tools,
programmable climate-control systems that eliminate entering hot cars
in summer and cold ones in winter are just a few features that car
owners may one day enjoy thanks to fuel-cell technology.
Fuel cells, electrochemical devices that convert energy into
electricity without combustion, produce electricity, heat and water,
but no pollution. Because a fuel-cell car is an electrical power
generator, it provides a substantial amount of power. The vehicles'
high-power voltage allows designers to stretch their imaginations and
offer unconventional options such as coffeemakers.
Despite major investments by automakers in the new technology,
questions remain. Opportunities and challenges of fuel cells will be
discussed in several presentations during the 1999 SAE International
Congress & Exposition Monday through Thursday in Detroit. Ken Dircks
of Ballard Automotive Inc. says that we stand at the threshold of a
new era in alternative propulsion. In a paper, he addresses recent
developments by Ballard Power Systems and discusses global alliances
formed to bring fuel-cell vehicles to market by 2004.
Philip Pindo Mok, DaimlerChrysler, and Andre Martin, Ballard
Automotive G.m.b.H., are also optimistic. In another paper, they say
fuel cells offer a new approach. They argue today's fuel-cell concept
vehicles display comparable performance as conventional cars but offer
environmental benefits not possible with internal combustion engines.
Industry experts such as Richard K. Stobart, Cambridge Consultants,
have questions about the new technology. In "Fuel-Cell Power for
Passenger Cars: What Barriers Remain?" Stobart says that in spite of
major investments in fuel-cell technology, questions remain; among
them, will consumers accept the vehicles.
