Colo.-Based Firm Provides Hybrid Electric System for Israelis John

A Colorado electric-propulsion company has just delivered one of its
small-but-strong power systems to the Technion-Israel Institute of
Technology so the institute can further development of a
hybrid-electric power-train system in a large, tracked vehicle.

Unique Mobility Inc., a research and manufacturing firm based in
Golden, designed the system for the institute, an Israeli
advanced-technology company. "We believe there is a tremendous
opportunity to introduce hybrid-electric propulsion systems in
combat-class vehicles where performance ... and stealth mission
capability" are provided to the user, said Ray Geddes, chairman and
CEO at Unique.

Hybrid-electric systems combine power from electric motors and
conventional diesel or gasoline engines and can be operated in an
all-electric mode to give off a "low thermal signature" which makes a
vehicle difficult to detect using infrared sensors.

The components, made by Unique in Golden, consist of two large
electric traction motors, rated at 75 kilowatts each, and a generator
rated at up to 100 kilowatts. Each motor measures only 13 by 15 inches
and weighs just 190 pounds, but has a maximum torque of 550
foot-pounds.

In comparison, a conventional 6.8-liter diesel engine producing about
the same amount of torque weighs 1,300 pounds, said John Gould,
founder of Unique. Gould added that the generator, unlike military
generators of the past which were mounted on trailers and towed, is
contained within the vehicle. Gould said the small generator can power
field hospitals, a block of residential homes or provide emergency
power to wherever it can drive. He wouldn't say how much Unique's
contract with the Israelis is worth.

Unique's motors often are designed so a driving motor is placed in the
center of a wheel and directly drives the vehicle's axle. The motors
sent to Israel will be used to develop a track-propelled vehicle.
"Unique is involved in a number of hybrid-electric programs," said
Bill Rankin, Unique's president and COO. "The 75-watt system is used
as a traction system as well as an on-board generator in various
projects."

Currently, Rankin said, the system is being integrated with a John
Deere natural-gas engine for use as a generator aboard large hybrid
vehicles for both military and civilian use. Unique previously has
developed a hybrid-electric propulsion system for the HMMWV, a
military all-purpose vehicle often called the Hummer.

In addition to its headquarters in Golden, Unique operates
manufacturing facilities in the Weld County town of Frederick, and St.
Charles, Mo. The Frederick unit makes electric motors and gear
assemblies and the St. Charles plant produces electronic assemblies
and wire harnesses.
