EV - Canada NewsWire (CNNW) Canada Post to Test Electric-Drive
Vehicle 02/25/99 (Copyright Canada NewsWire 1999)

OTTAWA, February 25 /CNW/ - Canada Post Corporation today announced
plans to test prototypes of electric-drive vehicles specifically
designed for postal services. The one-year test period will begin in
Ottawa and Montreal the second week of March.

Jean Benard, General Manager, Mail Logistics for Canada Post said,
``The corporation's operating environment is characterized by pick-up
and delivery in urban areas, an activity that is well suited for
electric powered vehicles.''

Over the next year Canada Post will pilot test four electric-drive
vehicles to monitor their performance in Canada's climate. Two of the
prototypes are Solectria Corporation conversions of Canada Post's
right-hand drive vehicles. Another prototype being tested is a
General Motors product. The fourth vehicle is a Solectria electric
stepvan.

The two converted Canada Post electric-drive vehicles will undergo
rigorous road and track testing by Transport Canada as well as
emissions testing by Environment Canada.

``The electric-drive vehicles will help reduce the emission of carbon
dioxide and other greenhouse gases and provide our employees with a
cleaner and quieter work environment'', said Benard. We believe that
environmental protection and conservation are essential to the
well-being of our employees, customers and the communities we
serve.''
