SatCon Technology Ships New Brushless DC Motor; SatCon Ships First
Motor to ALSTOM Automation Schilling Robotics
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 24, 1999--SatCon Technology
Corporation(R) today announced that it has shipped the first of its
new brushless DC motors. The new line of motors, and their
associated drives, was announced in a SatCon press release on
December 10, 1998.
Developed in collaboration with ALSTOM Automation Schilling Robotics,
the first delivery of motors will be used as thrusters for undersea
deep submergence remotely operated vehicles [...].
The motor and drive systems also have commercial application beyond
this immediate use for industrial automation, and robotics for large
manufacturing machinery such as those used in the production of
automobiles, paper, and textiles.
"These motors were designed to replace older hydraulic drive systems,"
said Dr. James Kirtley, SatCon Vice President and General Manager of
the Technology Division. "As such, we've taken care to mix design,
material selection, and manufacturing techniques to produce a rugged
and reliable motor. In addition to our electric machinery experience,
we've also applied our power electronics expertise to produce an
electronic drive that provides efficient energy management for the
entire system."
"As we look to the future of machines, we will need ever increasing
efficiency in both motors and their electronic drives," said David
Eisenhaure, President and Chief Executive Officer. "SatCon has focused
on providing energy management improvements in its designs of
electronics, motors, and sensors that will make this new generation of
machines more efficient by reducing their energy consumption and
increasing their throughput."
"The motor and drive system for ALSTOM is an excellent example of
applying SatCon's energy management design for an electronic drive to
replace an older, less efficient hydraulic design," concluded
Eisenhaure. "This energy management concept has broad application
across SatCon's various customers and markets, from industrial
automation to hybrid electric vehicles, and SatCon's fuel cell vehicle
electronics for one of the major automotive manufacturers, as well as
our recent automotive integrated power modules. We expect to
manufacture these new brushless DC motors and drive systems at our
Magmotor Division in Worcester, MA."
SatCon Technology Corporation(R) designs, develops, and manufactures
"Active Motion Control"(R) systems including advanced electric motors,
high density power electronics, suspension systems, satellite control
systems, propulsion systems, and flywheel energy-storage systems for a
variety of commercial and government customers. SatCon's Film
Microelectronics, Inc. subsidiary designs and manufactures
microelectronic circuits and interconnect products. Additionally,
SatCon has a Magmotor Division in Worcester, Massachusetts and a
Technology Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
