WHAT does $13,000 get you these days, automotively speaking? About
98% of a Hyundai Excel or 94% of a Daewoo Lanos? Perhaps one-tenth of
a BMW M3?

Or 100% of a Scootcar Fun-Tech electric car. Think of the latest
addition to the Scootcar line-up (did you know there was actually a
model range?) as a cross between an electric golf buggy and a
motorcycle and you start to get a rough idea of what this vehicle is
all about.

It is a vehicle built for two and with a total length of 2001mm and
width of 1006mm it will only ever hold two. The interior is spartan
even by the standards of old Sparta with a bench seat, a steering
column-cum-handlebars with throttle and forward/reverse switch and a
speedometer.

The boot (believe it, there is a boot) holds the three 12-volt
batteries used to drive the 1.5kW electric motor which in turn drives
the rear wheels. Fast it ain't but it is fun. A top whack of 25kmh
guarantees those aboard get plenty of attention from passers-by.

Scootcar's Queensland importers already have a 50cc petrol-powered
model on sale in Australia and there are plans for a 125cc machine.
In Queensland, where they can be registered as motorcycles, they are
doing a roaring trade in tourist areas. The electric model is bound
for the golf market.
