Or perhaps an "Ekranoplan" - a ground effect aircraft the Russians
developed, which the Germans are now beginning to commercialise -
- I saw a program on these ( part of the Equinox series ), fascinating
stuff....one that worked very well was a reversed delta-wing design,
would be totally unstable in "normal flight", but perfectly stable
in ground effect flight, and unable to rise up too high...

You might be able to get some useful range with this idea, and hell,
if your batteries run down, well you just land on the water and then
chug along slowly till you get back to shore!

I guess we'll have to wait until lithium batteries are common for
this to be really viable......

Fun to think about though....
