EV - PR Newswire (PRN) Topeka to Host National Solar Powered
BikeRayce 05/27/99 (Copyright (c) 1999, PR Newswire)
TOPEKA, Kan., May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Pedals and photons will mix to
power solar-electric bicycles around a closed loop track at Forbes Air
Industrial Park at Topeka's Forbes Field, May 28-30 in the Fifth
Annual Solar BikeRayce USA (SBR). The solar-electric and muscle
powered vehicles will race the 100 kilometer (62 mile) course rain or
shine.
The challenge to learn about, build and race a solar bicycle has been
met by nearly sixty high school teams from fourteen states, Canada,
and Japan. Although participants are primarily high school
competitors, anyone may enter. Adult (15-50) and Senior (50+) men's
and women's categories are growing fields of competition.
(editor's note: see list of competitors below)
On Saturday, May 29, teams will queue up to be checked for readiness
by officials before they are timed through a "flying 200" meter sprint
course at 5:00 p.m. The following morning, Sunday, May 30, the solar
powered bikes will begin their 100K marathon at 10:00 am based on
qualifying times from the 200 meter sprint. In past competitions held
in Missouri, Kansas, Indiana, Australia, and Japan, the futuristic
pedal/electric vehicles have clocked speeds through the traps in
excess of 40 mph. Admission is free and open to everyone.
For an hour and a half the competitors will drain their pedal and
electric power. At 11:30 a.m. all the bikes will be called off the
track for a three hour "recharge period." During this time the
non-pedaled "S-Class" solar-only vehicles will be on the track vying
to be the first to complete the 100k in the three hour limit.
Following the recharge break the pedal-electric class bikes will
resume their marathon at 2:30 p.m., with the winner being the team
that finishes in the shortest elapsed time.
Throughout the school year Solar BikeRayce presents workshops on solar
vehicles across the United States. Teachers are invited to bring a
student to a unique learning opportunity where teacher and student
learn along side one another to build and race a solar bicycle. By
the end of the two-day workshop, participants have actually built a
working solar electric bike. In the past three years over a dozen
entries for SBR have gone on to compete and win at the World Solar
Bike Race in Akita, Japan.
This is the third year the Kansas Corporation Commission has sponsored
the Solar BikeRayce. Both Crowder College, a progressive community
college in Neosho, Mo. and New Resources Group, a Missouri based
energy consulting company, have been sponsors since the program
launched in 1995. For information about Solar BikeRayce events or
workshops, contact Gina Eberle at SBR Headquarters, 800-458-2898 or
