MONTREAL (CP) -- Ford considers Quebec a good market for electric cars
and will deliver six of them to Hydro-Quebec, says Ford Canada
president Bobbie Gaunt. Gaunt said Ford Canada hopes to sell 15 to 20
of the Ranger electric cars this year, aiming at firms that already
own a fleet of vehicles. Quebec and British Columbia are regarded as
Canada's top electric-car markets, she said.

For the moment, the average Canadian isn't the target of Ford's
electric-car marketing efforts because the cars cost from $48,895 to
$68,385, depending on the type of battery. Gaunt noted Ford was the
first car manufacturer to become an official supplier for the
$3-million Montreal 2000 electric vehicle project, a two-year venture
that was announced last January.

The project is aimed at firms that have car parks and are prepared to
integrate one or two electric cars into their vehicle fleet. Thanks to
the plan, about 40 electric cars are soon to be on Montreal streets.
Gaunt also said the Ford Focus, which is to replace the Escort, should
do well in Quebec where small cars are 75 per cent of the market,
compared to 65 per cent across Canada.

"It's a matter of price but also of driving pleasure," Gaunt said. in
an interview. "Quebecers like to drive this kind of car. They're more
European than other Canadians or Americans." Gaunt also said Ford has
no plans to increase its North American production capacity through
the establishment of new plants.
