SHREVEPORT, La., May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern States Power Co. 
donated a hybrid electric vehicle for emission research.  The
following story was released by the Media Relations Office at the
University of California at Riverside (UCR):

"The Riverside-based California Alternative Fuels and Energy
Foundation (CAFE) presented a Toyota hybrid gasoline/electric vehicle
to the University of California, Riverside on Thursday, May 13, 1999. 
The presentation marks the beginning of a partnership between the
Foundation and UCR's College of Engineering's Center for Environmental
Research and Technology (CE-CERT) to investigate environmental and
energy aspects of alternative fuels and develop advanced
transportation technologies."

"The presentation from CAFE -- which funds research into cleaner
burning alternative fuels in order to advance new transportation and
energy technologies -- will give faculty and student researchers at
CE-CERT access to one of the newest hybrid vehicles from a major auto
maker."

The car was donated to CAFE by the Southern States Power Company, a
Louisiana-based energy and transportation company composed of four
divisions including Advanced Fuel Cell Technology, Power Generation
and Distribution, Alternative Clean Fuels including Bio-Diesel, and
Composite & Alternative Fuel Vehicles.  For further information, refer
