Re: EVDB freeway testing!
This is the first run of my (neon's) EVDB on the freeway.
What a blast. I did only a short freeway run, and it really dropped the
batteries. However, its not an electrical thing really. The buggy has about
1/4 inch tow-out right now (and thats just by my eye, its likely worse). At
the rear I have never checked, but it looks OK. I will have both checked
soon, and corrected (0 tow, both ends).
I have never talked to someone in another car on the freeway before
(espcially the perviously ICE DB, it was quite loud), wow! Yes, I passed
this toyota 4x4 minitruck and then he caught back up to ask me about my car!
>"Is that an electric car?"
"Yes!"
>"Wow, on the freeway"
"Not a problem for modern electric cars"
>"Thats cool!"
"Thanx"
...long pause as he really checks out the EVDB...
>"Did you build it yourself?" (I didn't hear what he said)
"What?"
>"Did you build it yourself?"
"Yea!"
>"Thats cool!"
"Thanx!
At that point I dropped the hammer (quit squishing the bugs?) for moment
and dropped in behind him for the Boeing freeway exit (going south to it, I
live right between the Boeing freeway exit and the 41st street ramps). We
where both going about 70mph down I-5, and this part happens to be about 2%
uphill. I have verified that the buggy will go 75mph (uphill thats all I
can do, and 4th is no better than 3rd).
Now about this range. Well, the optimas are not broken in (now up to 33
miles in 4 cycles). Also, the horrible tow-out. And a beach buggy is just
about a brick wall when it comes wind drag. Trip total, 9 miles (4
freeway). What really got me though, back in town and heading home I
decided to punch it (at near current limit in second), bad idea. I saw 89
volts (for a fraction of a second) and quickly jumped off the throttle
(back to 114).
The buggy is doing its job. Its gets attention, and is easily recognized as
an electric car (easily reconginzed at even 70mph). PLUGITN (WA) is hitting
a home run on every outing (city or freeway). Thanx to all here for all the
help! EVs will not be ignored!!
