Usually the lower the peak efficiency speed, the larger and heavier the 
motor.

You might be better off to find a way to get the motor turning faster.  
There was some discussion several months ago about using an overdrive 
unit (installed "backwards") for this sort of thing, but I seem to recall 
that it was deemed impractical.  Someone else mentioned using a small SUV 
2-speed transfer case.  Either of these would add weight.  I think I 
would try to find a speed shop that could change the gears in the 
differential -- no additional weight that way.
