Hi Mark.  By the way, thanks for the battery information.  I still
am not sure quite what was going on.  These things are kind of
complicated.  Perhaps I am just rediscovering different battery
failure mechanisms.
 
When you say center-tapped full wave diode, do you mean:
       (-------|>|------- plus
       (            |
       (            |
       (----------------- minus
       (            |
       (            |
       (-------|>|---
?????
If so, then you need two boost transformers, or, equivalently,
you will need to extend the two windings on both top and 
bottom.  I hope I understood correctly.
