It all depends on your application, but... a good starting point might
be that used for house wiring:

14 gauge     15 amps
12 gauge     20 amps
10 gauge     30 amps
 8 gauge     40 amps
 6 gauge     50 amps

If a single conductor and/or use high-temperature insulation, can get a
lot more current for a given size... but then have more waste heat and
greater voltage drop.
