Bank of Alameda Adds Toyota EV, Free Charger 8/27/99,
Alameda, Calif. - The Bank of Alameda has added a zero-emission
electric vehicle (EV) - an electric Toyota RAV4 mini sport-utility
vehicle - to its courier-vehicle fleet and is opening an EV-charging
station on September 1. The locally owned and managed community bank
will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:30 a.m. that will include
demonstration EVs from General Motors and Toyota. The
free-to-the-public charging station was installed with the support of
CALSTART, Alameda Power & Telecom, Edison EV, GM, Toyota, Ford and
Honda. Two charging spaces are provided, one has an inductive-type
charger, the other is a conductive-type charger. The charger
installation was underwritten by the bank and the "Charge!" program, a
partnership between the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the
City and County of San Francisco, and the three Clean Cities
Coalitions in the Bay Area.

Ford Offers EV Discounts for Zoos and Schools 8/28/99,
California - Ford Motor Co. is now offering $7,000 to California
educational institutions, zoos and aquariums that lease its electric
Ranger pickups, which come in California with longer-range
nickel-metal hydride batteries. Such customers must apply the $7,000
as a down payment toward the lease; the lease balance may be paid
up-front, annually, or in 36 monthly installments. Both public and
private schools are eligible. The trucks have a 1,250-pound payload
capacity and three-year/36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty
coverage. Customers must take delivery by Dec. 31, 1999 and vehicle
availability is limited.

ERC, Bath Iron Works to Develop Marine Fuel Cells 8/30/99,
Danbury, Connecticut - Fuel cell-developer Energy Research Corp. and
a subsidiary of General Dynamics Co. have formed a partnership to
develop an advanced, carbonate-based, fuel-cell energy plant for
defense marine applications. Bath Iron Works, a designer/builder of
surface combatants for the U.S. Navy, and ERC will be seeking to
"dramatically improve ship electric power generation, also known as
ship hotel power" by developing a direct fuel cell that uses marine
diesel fuels. ERC is already under contract with the Navy to develop
such a marine fuel cell; it recently demonstrated a laboratory-scale
fuel-treatment system that enables the use of marine fuels. Direct
fuel cells internally reform carbon-based fuels, which eliminates the
need for the external hydrogen-generation characteristic of most
fuel-cell systems. They also produce virtually no emissions and are
very quiet. ERC is also conducting a market assessment under a
contract with John J. McMullen Associates Inc. for the U.S. Coast
Guard.

Sebastopol's Solar Station Powers Electric Bikes 8/30/99,
Sebastopol, Calif. - Sebastopol, Calif. has installed what may be the
world's first public, solar-powered electric charging station
exclusively designed for electric bikes and scooters, reports the
Santa Rosa Press-Democrat. The charging station in the city's downtown
plaza was in part paid for by several corporate donors, including
electric bike and scooter-maker ZAPWORLD.COM, which is headquartered
in the same city. The charging station is located on a street-light
pole that has two solar panels atop it, and steel hoops so users may
lock up their vehicles while charging. Two cigarette lighter-style
connectors are provided for users to plug in. A full charge would
require about six hours, but typical users are using them for a couple
hours while they shop. The owner of a local copy shop is one of the
users; he commutes on his electric bike two or three days a week.
