I wrote Mr. Markowitz the day I got the magazine, I think he's right on.
I'm not in favor of golf-cart size EV's, but I think there's a market
for EV's a bit less featured than the EV1's, EV Plus's and Rangers
out there, at a correspondingly lower price. Think of it as the
'Linux' of EV's- a simple DC EV that serves as a basis for aftermarket
improvements and owner embellishment. Wishful thinking perhaps, but
it's no suprise there aren't EV1's at $35K in everyone's driveway.
How about a no frills Metro-style EV for $10-15K that I can get through
a regular dealer? Won't happen anytime soon, too much margin on the
SUV's right now. We're just going to have to wait until the cost
of dinosaur juice gets too high to keep the 8 mpg giants moving.
