Every time an auto manufacturer announces another car that promises to
save the environment, you know it will be some very sensible,
plastic-bodied square-shaped runabout with little power, even fewer
amenities and enough compromises to scuttle the interest of all but
the most dedicated tree-hugger.
Not so this latest batch of concept cars from Chrysler. The Dodge
Power Wagon, Charger R/T, Chrysler Citadel and Jeep Commander are
alternative fuel cars with pizzazz and performance. The Charger R/T
has styling reminiscent of a late-60s NASCAR stock car and a
supercharged V-8 that runs on compressed natural gas. The Chrysler
Citadel is a hybrid design that Chrysler claims uses the electric
motor as a "turbo" boost for its 253 hp V-6 gasoline engine. And
Chrysler claims that the fuel-cell-powered Jeep Commander is the
world's first 4WD electric vehicle.
