Nissan to Launch Ultrasmall Electric Cars Next Feb. 09/27/1999 Jiji
Press English News Service (Copyright 1999)
Tokyo, Sept. 27 (Jiji Press)--Nissan Motor Co. said Monday it will
launch the ultrasmall Hypermini electric vehicle in Japan next
February.
The two-passenger vehicle designed for urban commuting and shopping
will feature a lightweight but highly rigid body that is just 266
centimeters long, at least 70 centimeters shorter than ordinary
minivehicles.
On a single, four-hour battery charge, the Hypermini will have a
driving range of up to 115 kilometers and reach a top speed of 100
kilometers per hour, Nissan officials said.
The vehicle will be equipped with run-flat tires which can keep
running for about 80 kilometers after a puncture, the first in Japan.
The car will carry a price tag of 4 million yen and up.
Nissan expects to sell 500 units in about two years, targeting
government offices and corporations, the officials said.

Nissan Motor told consumers September 27 to look for the launch of the
electric car Hyper Mini in February. The company devised the
two-passenger car as a solution for short work commutes and company
use particularly in local urban areas. The Hyper Mini can run 115 km
per charge, a distance that Nissan considers adequate for the proposed
usage patterns. The auto weighs just 840 kg thanks to the use of
plenty of aluminum and other light materials. It reaches a top speed
of 100 km/h and uses just one yen's worth of power per km. The auto
itself will cost 4,015,000 yen, a price that includes the charging
system, although government subsidies would bring the total
effectively to about 2.5 million yen. Nissan expects primarily to
lease the auto to industries and government agencies.
