Newbies: Please Read ... sysop message ver093099
{As POSTed on the Internet Electric Vehicle List}
To: All the newbies (new either to the EV List and/or the Internet)
As sysop, I see all the new subscribers to our List. The following
should help you on your way to using this EV List efficaciously.
Introduction
I am Bruce Parmenter. I have many EV hats, thus years ago, I was given
the handle of {EVangel} (that has a history of it's own, but we won't
go into that right now).
I Have One Main Email Address: BruceDP@iname.com
(although I send from other addresses)
:: EV List sysop Hat on ::
The EV List (or EVDL) is NOT a newsgroup.
Users must follow the EV List Charter and guidelines (below).
*NOT ALLOWED ON THIS LIST:
-BLANENT ADVERTISING
-ATTACHED FILES
...
:: EV List user Hat on ::
If you are new to the Internet,
USING ALL CAPITALS IS SHOUTING AT PEOPLE,
and is not acceptable on the EV List.
There are many on the EV List that will help you with your newbie EV
questions. In many cases we are the only source for this information.
Please POST your EV questions using an appropriate subject, and we
will do our best to answer them.
Example Subject: EV newbie questions, convert a Chevy S-10 Truck
The subject thread will let you follow the discussion.
:: EV List Editor's Hat on ::
One of my EV List duties is the EV List Editor. This is a title that I
constantly work toward earning, year after year. That is why you will
see so many POSTs from me. I pay for the newswires, and spend the time
to glean them for your reading and commenting pleasure.
Your comments on these POSTs can be POSTed to the EV List, or if you
wish, directly to me. Your feedback is welcome :-)
:: EV List sysop Hat on ::
Another of my duties is as part of a team of volunteers that maintains
this List. My title is sysop in this capacity. My sysop counter part
is Mark Bahlke mbahlke@mcd.intel.com of the SEVA Chapter. Mark and I
work to handle the majority of the EV List issues.
What we can't handle, we approach the EV List owner: Clyde. The San
Jose State University allows us to use their server for free. Of
course sometimes this means we are subject to our host's downtime
schedule (like weekends or on Holidays).
Volunteer EV List user efforts:
Mike Thompson is paying for the EV List archival web site. This is
free for us to use. This means you can click on a web bookmark, read
the EV List POSTs as they are sent, and the site has a keyword search
option to find POSTs with your interests.
Zig Zichterman maintains the EV List ftp site. This site is for
placing files that you want to share. Direct POSTs with attached files
or html are NOT ALLOWED. You give the file to Zig, then place a
standard POST of where it is so those interested can pull it down
(download).
There are two email addresses to know.
One is used to POST your messages to the entire EV List users to read.
ev@sjsuvm1.sjsu.edu
Please proof your messages before sending. All POSTs are archived on
the EV archive web site, for all time (their are people who are saving
these POSTs as a historical document of the development of Electric
Vehicles).
The other email address (the one you used to subscribe with) is for
sending subscription commands to the server (you are talking to a
computer). listserv@sjsuvm1.sjsu.edu
*DO NOT send subscription commands to the EV List users email address.
Send them to the correct listserv email address.
For details on these items, check out Mike Thompson's EV list page:
http://www.madkatz.com/~mikt/ev/evlist.html
[These are some of the basic elements of the EV List Charter which all
EV List users are subject to.]
EV List's Focus
Electric Vehicles (electric drive, no engines, of all types and
sizes). Vehicles have a broad definition on the EV List. Generally
mean a road or highway capable car/truck/van. But the EV List users
have interests that have covered from Electric Boats to Electric
Aircraft.
Hybrid Electric Vehicles (electric drive train, with either a parallel
or serial ICE assist). Please limit the amount of ICE POSTs, and take
them off line if possible.
Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (electric drive train, using a fuel cell
as the energy source, with or without battery). Please limit
non-vehicle fuel cell items. Those items are freely discussed on the
Alternative Energy (AE) List.
Solar Electric Vehicles (electric drive train, using a solar panels
(PVs) as the energy source, with or without battery). Please limit
non-vehicle solar items. Those items are freely discussed on the
Alternative Energy (AE) List.
EVs are the main focus of the EV List. If the EV List POSTs increase
to the maximum bandwidth (too many POSTs per day), the List management
will re-visit this issue, and may separate out non-EV interests to
other Lists (i.e. a Hybrid List, and Fuel Cell List, etc.).
-But, we are not there yet-
Off Topic POSTs
Off Topic POSTs are discouraged. But if you must, please use OT: in
front of the Subject. This will alert the EV List users that the POST
is not relating to the EV List's focus. Many have found this method an
acceptable compromise, as those that want to read them can, and those
that do not, can immediately delete or skip them.
Example: OT: Flying Ford and other hiccups
OT: Govt Business As Usual
OT: blowing things up in childhood WAS Re: fried capacitors
OT: Re: Vortex Tube
However, please make every effort to take the Off Topic conversations
off line (contact the person directly). Else, a long drawn out Off
Topic POSTing bout will occur, using up valuable EV List bandwidth
(too many non-EV POSTs).
EV items for sale
The EV List users have expressed a desire to allow EV items for sale
to be POSTed, BUT the POSTs have to be tempered and do not represent
Sales Spam. There are several EV companies on the EV List. You'll
notice these EV companies represent themselves well, by giving their
time to answer the EV questions without just pushing their EV
products.
EV items for sale can be POSTed in twice per month intervals. The
subject and message content should NOT be an insult to the EV List
user's intelligence with blatant advertisement wording.
WRONG: EVS FOR SALE!!! CHEAP!!! $2,000 WE ARE THE BEST DEAL !!!!
Acceptable: Wilde EV components for sale ...
Ecar performance EV components ...
Electro Automotive conversion kit sale ...
Innovations EV components and kits available ...
Individual EV List users may also POST their EV items. Please use the
same tasteful standard that we ask of our EV companies. I suggest that
the subject be your guide: put the model and location in the subject.
WRONG: BUY MY EV CHEAP $3,000!!!!!
Acceptable: Mazda RX-7 donor available in San Francisco, CA
EV adapter plates for sale, Seattle, WA
VW Rabbit 96V for sale, Dallas, TX
POSTs with Attached Files are Not Allowed
Files can be placed on the EV List ftp site, and then send a POST of
it's location. * see:
http://www.madkatz.com/~mikt/ev/evlist.html
EVents or meetings
I am also an Electric Auto Association (EAA www.eaaev.org ) member,
and an EVents Officer with the EAA San Jose Chapter. There are several
EAA Chapters as this organization has been around for thirty years.
But also, know that if you don't know of an EAA chapter near you,
please POST and inquiry. There is probably a nearby EV organization:
EAA, non-EAA, or enough EV people near you to start an EAA chapter.
(If you have EV thoughts/ideas, be assured, there are at least 100
other people in the world with the same thoughts.
You will see POSTed announcements of EVents. These EVents allow the
public to get rides in EVs, and let them be aware of their EV options.
There, the public can find out directly from people who drive EVs,
what EVs will and won't do.
If you want to POST your EVents or meetings, please limit your
organization's POSTed EVents to twice per month.
Example: EVA/DC Meets Tuesday 05/18
OEVA April meeting
EVent: SVEAA @ Stanford University 8/18 Sat 10a-4p
Durham EV Association Meeting July 8th at 7:30 pm
...
EV List Violators
Violators can be subject to List management action. Many former EV
List users were SPAM'd off the EV List by the EV List users before any
List management action needed to be taken (But we are adults here, you
should know better).
Courtesy
As a courtesy to the other EV List users, if you know your POST is
going to be long, you could put -long at the end of the subject.
Please make every effort to maintain the EV List in the same manner
and method your fellow EV List family has been doing before you
joined.
Our EV List family has earned the rating of one of the best lists out
on the Internet. This is accomplished because we all have the same EV
interest: to keep the EV List, clean and focused.
As always, EV List user's comments are welcome by the EV List
management team :-)
