Level 3 Conductive charging..

Paul, you can buy a copy of the spec from SAE. It can be ordered on-line
from their Web site <www.sae.org>.

For the benefit of those unaquainted with all the different specs, J1850
covers the communications between the EV and an offboard fast charger
(Level 3 charging). The EV must control the offboard charger and
communicate to it the voltage and current requirements. Sometime in the
future (who knows when?) we will have a charging infrastructure that not
only has Level 2 (240VAC) available at charging stations but also Level 3
(DC current up to 120 Kw and potentially up to 240 Kw). This would allow
fast opportunity charging (replenish half the pack capacity in 10 to 15
minutes).

He's not on the list, but you might ask Tom Stockebrand (stock@swcp.com)
about J1850. He is working with Avcon (he doesn't work for them) and has
suggested modifications to the wall box, connector and inlet to accomodate
J1850 requirements.

His suggestions to Avcon are:

"Box
"There should be only one offering with a single extra cost option of having
"the 2 Com leads and signal ground brought out to a terminal strip in the
"box so we can get on with hooking up to J1850 signaling."

"The Inlet
"There should be only one, also. It should have the double throw
"proximity switch (Honda). I happen to like the Honda night light idea, too.
"It should also bring out Com1, Com2, and Signal ground. Even though nobody
"will use them now they can't be retrofit and they don't cost much. Smarter
"chargers of the future will need them."

The currently available Avcon PowerPak and Inlet are good for Level 2
charging only. Maybe we could talk them into supplying future upgrades
to Level 3 for those who want to install the Level 2 system now.
