Re: Dual motor question
Peter,
Basically you have 2 questions. Are 2 motors better than one big motor?
And, Is direct drive better than a transmission?
The two motor setup has more brush area so the brushes do not get as hot.
Also, the electronic shifting(parallel to series) can eliminate a higher
voltage battery pack. The problem comes in when you try to connect them
together. Some of the duallers may want to chime in here.
About a month ago I had to decide on using direct drive over a transmission.
I posted that I would use direct drive but since then I have changed my
mind. The cost of a transmission is less than a larger controller. In my
case the tranny was $100 + adapter($650) and the controller difference was
$800. Using a transmission gives you more efficient use of the motor. One
concern with direct drive is the motor getting hot. The motor spins at half
RPM most of the time never approaching its best operation point.
Probably only a penny's worth.
