Re: Strange EV Ideas
I've used mineral oil myself. I had built a "speaker dummy load," which is
something you hook to your stereo when you want to test the power out
without actually using a speaker -- something that would drive your
neighbors nuts.
In any case, I bought some high-wattage (50W) 8 Ohm resistors built
specifically for this purpose, and mounted them inside a plastic project
box from the terminals that were mounted on top. I filled it with mineral
oil and sealed it all up.
Mind you there wasn't any circulation or cooling, but the increased thermal
mass created by the oil effectively raised the power dissipation of the
resistors, if only for a short time.
In any case, mineral oil has a higher dielectric (insulation) rating than
air, provided you keep the contaminants out.
