Thanks to all who replied about the possible PIVCO sighting.  None of the 
pictures so far look like what I remember exactly.  The swatch is probably the 
closest, but I remember round headlights for some reason and a British style 
license plate smack across the nose, possibly in a depression suited for it.  
I also don't think that the windshield was quite the cab forward style as seen 
in most of the newer mini cars.
